Please Name This Dish

I hate following recipes exactly. It's why I'm generally not a good baker. Anything that has to be accurate within an eighth of a teaspoon is too fiddly for me. My wife, on the other hand, is a great baker. She'll start from a recipe, then adjust every time she makes it until she has it perfected. Then that's the exact recipe she'll make each time. So I'm always pleasantly surprised when she goes completely off the map, like she did with this dish. It was a classic example of, "Now let's … [Read more...]

How To Make Rotisserie Chicken

I bought myself a new toy for my birthday. A rotisserie attachment for my grill. The main thing I wanted it for is to do a standing rib roast this coming Christmas. Yup, I'll be huddling in the garage, with the grill set up in the doorway. Hopefully it'll be snowing, that would make for some great pictures. But just to break it in, I did a chicken. I've had the rotisserie chickens you can buy at the grocery store, and they're actually pretty good. But of course I think I can do better. … [Read more...]

How To Make Giblet Gravy

When you buy a whole chicken or turkey, you usually get the giblets stuffed inside the cavity. You can toss them out, feed them to the dog or, if you like flavor, make gravy out of them. How To Make Egg Salad

This has to be a joke, right? I mean egg salad for Pete's sake! First of all, who actually eats egg salad past about eight years old? And second, who needs a step-by-step recipe guide to make it? As to the first question, I eat egg salad. It's like deviled eggs, on bread. And I like me some deviled eggs. So who needs directions for it? Anyone who's never made it. No matter how easy something is, until you've seen it for the first time you don't know that it's easy. More important is … [Read more...]

Purple Bean Salad

I'd never had purple beans before. I saw them at the farmers market where a friend of mine was buying some. I asked and she told me that they taste just like green beans, and in fact turn the same color green when you cook them. Well what would be the point of that? So I knew I needed to get some, and I knew I couldn't cook them. I decided this would be a perfect time to use some of the chive blossom vinegar. The result not only tastes great, it looks incredibly cool. Oh, and I … [Read more...]
