I'd like to apologize in advance to any Southerners reading this. Yes, your Grandmother's biscuits and gravy were better than anything I'll ever make. I don't deserve to even call this biscuits and gravy. I'm a damn Yankee, and I should stick to beef stroganoff and croutons. Good, that's out of the way? Now, if you don't already have your own tried-and-true sausage gravy recipe, this one should do just fine for a start. … [Read more...]

How To Make Sourdough Biscuits
September 24, 2008 (Updated March 24, 2014) by
I mentioned yesterday this was going to be my first cross-blog post. Anne made me an offer and I took her up on it. She would make the fish chowder, I would make the biscuits. One more fake food comes off my list of guilty pleasures. I'm a sucker for nachos with cheese sauce. I've had the "cheese" sauce in jars and in cans. Have you ever read the ingredients in those things? Some of them don't list a single dairy ingredient. That's so nasty. But they taste so gooood. I finally went looking for recipes to make nacho cheese sauce from real food. And maybe some actual cheese. (I know ... crazy, huh?) So did it work? Well, like I said, one more fake food I won't be … [Read more...]
I Will NOT Cook Like Your Danish Grandmother
September 18, 2008 (Updated March 24, 2014) by
I've read a lot of really old cookbooks. And when I say "old" I mean back to medieval English. But I have never seen anything quite like this little gem. I haven't read the whole thing yet, so I'm holding out hope there's something even more amazing. But I had to share the first few things I found. … [Read more...]
