Bacon Bacon Bacon

I’ve been saving up links about bacon, and finally saw something I just had to mention. If you haven’t already seen it, go check out the bacon explosion. I’m not going to include a picture or say anything else about it. You already know, just from the name, whether you’re going to click that link or not.

Now here’s an idea that is probably the only bacon recipe I have no desire to ever try, from Three Panel Soul.

Next up is Grace, who really has a great sense of perspective.

And Woot.com has something that I almost want: bacon salt.

Have you ever wanted to make your own bacon? Have fun with that.

I may have been wrong. There are two bacon recipes I don’t want to try. But this one it’s because of the totally creepy black frosting.

Finally a few things that I seriously hope are just for gag gifts. (Yes, they’re affiliate links. If you buy from them I might get about two cents.)

Without regard to its utility, this is my favourite post yet, Drew. My arteries thank you.

I actually have the three versions of Bacon Salt. They do smell like bacon and they add a bacon-y flavor to your food but, I don’t recommend trying it straight from the shaker. There is a LOT of Paprika in them.

    The same company makes Baconnaise.
I made deviled eggs with it and they were a HUGE hit.

I really like your blog. I strive to cook like my southern Grandma as much as possible. She recently passed so it’s so nice that I’m reminded of her every time I use one of the recipes she taught me.

I curse the men who invented that disgusting sausage and bacon log (OF COURSE it was men who invented it), because now my husband is trying to convince me to make it. And I will not. Never ever ever. So there.

You must look at Archie McPhee. They have bacon flavored toothpicks, gummi bacon, bacon wallets, bacon placemats. Oh what a wonder site that is.
My husband wants me to make the Bacon Explosion. With my homemade biscuits. I told him he can have it after he has his stress test next week.

Well, there is also baconunwrapped.com and mrbaconpants.com and somewhere I have a link to nothing but bacon recipes – probably 3 or 4 a day, every single day of the year. And they’re good, not just some cheap “throw bacon in it” stuff.

And McPhees in the kingdom! Oh, and don’t forget bacon of the month club.

Thor, your arteries will be fine. But don’t trust me, trust the PHd.

Christina, I’m totally going to make baconnaise next time I do deviled eggs.

Kat, have you looked at the picture? It looks like a prop from Nightmare Before Christmas.

Kristin, it’s just a roulade, I don’t see what you’re so worked up about? (Check out the two videos of that recipe.)

Stephanie, you know that making him wait like that is going to push his blood pressure up at least 10 points, don’t you?

MeadowLark, did you have to tell me that? I have more bacon recipes than I can do in a year already.

Our state fair here in FL ( Tampa) someone is offering chocolate covered bacon. Everyone who has been interviewed about it says it is really good.

Drew – Its my picture. Hershey’s Special Dark just comes out really dark

  10. Posted February 6, 2009 at 1:01 pm | Permalink

Julia, Michael Symon did that on Dinner Impossible when he was on the boardwalk. They said once people tried it they couldn’t make it fast enough.

Kat, you took the picture, but did you look at it? Okay, I kid. I’m sure it tasted good, but you have to admit it looks very glossy and very black on-screen.

I am visiting today to try to locate an old blog post where you explained the best method to strain and store bacon fat, and what do I find as the first post on the first page?

    BACON!

    Very fitting.

Now, to locate that old post.

  14. Posted February 7, 2009 at 3:06 pm | Permalink

Terry, the one you’re looking for is right here.

Yep, that would be it. I was able to find pretty quickly. I couldn’t recall if you suggested using plain paper towels or cheesecloth. Now I see you just used paper towels. Thanks.

Now I am off to get something to eat as I am starving, a consistent side effect from visiting your site.

The bacon explosion makes me gag a little bit. The evil genius who came up with that is definitely in the more is more camp. I tend to hang out in the less is more camp, unless we’re talking chocolate or caramel.

I would most certainly eat bacon salt, thank you very much. I’m a little afraid of the Baconnaise, because I’ve read the ingredient list. Yuck. Now, making regular mayonnaise or aioli with bacon salt, that I can get behind:)

  17. Posted February 8, 2009 at 1:31 pm | Permalink

Fiona, I wouldn’t try to follow their ingredient list. (And I don’t even plan to read it, thank you very much.) I’m talking about using my regular mayonnaise recipe, but replacing the oil with melted bacon fat. I’m a little worried about what the texture will be like as it cools, but there’s only one way to find out.

Drew, I remember seeing a recipe months ago for a BLT using bacon mayo. The chef just took the bacon grease to make the mayo, and my god it looked good. Definitely not for the dieters. BUT OH SO GOOD!

While I sometimes dream about bacon, and need the salt content to treat my low blood pressure (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it), the photos of the “bacon explosion” remind me of an evil creature that Godzilla may have fought in a 50′s horror movie…? Mothra’s cousin? I dunno.

Anyways, I thought I’d share this tidbit:

Melissa, that at least confirms for me that it can work. Cool.

Goldie, for a second there I though you were going to say it looked like something Godzilla left behind. And bacolicious is a thing of beauty. I love what they use for the example.

    Mmmmmm …bacon explosion.

One of my favourite bacon receipes is Kylie Kwong’s Luscious bacon braised with red wine and fresh cherries.

It’s dead easy to cook, is delicious and makes an impressive dinner pary dish. Yum yum.

I have actually had bacon ice cream that my friend made. It was… the weirdest thing I have ever tasted. But it wasn’t bad!

  23. Posted February 10, 2009 at 10:52 am | Permalink

Altissima, I can’t tell if that’s supposed to be a side dish or a dessert. But wow, it looks good either way.

Laura, the idea of it reminds me of Jelly Belly buttered popcorn flavored jelly beans. Yes, they really do taste like buttered popcorn. But they’re chewy like jelly beans. Totally weird, and I just can’t get into them.
