How To Peel A Potato — with Maryanne!

Ginger or Maryanne? Duh, Maryanne of course! Gingham halters and short-shorts, what’s not to like?

Ahem.

So anyway, it looks like Idaho is doing some kind of promotion, and they’ve got Dawn Wells doing the video. Nothing earth-shattering, but a neat tip if you haven’t seen it before.

If you can’t see the video in your email or feed reader, come check it out on the blog.

That was a neat trick… but I’m confused as to what to do next… it’s cooked for 15 minutes already… Maybe I’m still groggy and can’t think straight…

Barbara, return them to the boiling water and keep cooking. The ice bath is just to cool it off enough that you can handle them without gloves. Of course if you have gloves, you can skip the ice bath part. I’ve seen silicone gloves — not mitts, they had individual fingers on them — made just for things like this.

My usual technique is to dice them up first, without peeling them, and cook them all the way. They cook faster diced, and I can just slip the peels off when they’re done. It’s a bit messier, but faster.

I like microwaving my potatoes because they come out much silkier (mash heaven) probably because they release watter, and use a similar trick for pealing them. I put them in cold water and rub them little bit so that skin gets loose in a way . Then when I get them out of water skin just slips off them. Of course it works best for potatoes without sprouts. If there are sprouts it goes off in few pieces, but the best thing is usually sprouts also get out with skin.

Learn something new every day! Never thought it would have come from Maryanne, though… But you know, I think if it weren’t Maryanne I wouldn’t have tried it. Marketing GENIUS.

I saw this video when someone sent it to my email. I was so excited because I was making potato salad the next day for superbowl. I followed the instructions to the letter, and it didn’t work. When I tried to squeeze the skins off like she did, it seemed like it was going to work and then the potato broke in half. Tried again and again….no luck. Anyone else had success?
