Recipe Image Browser Finished

When I asked what I should do first, a visual recipe browser or printable recipe cards, 70% of you picked the browser. Several of you said in the comments that you’d like better category support so you can find things more easily.

Well, I killed two birds with one stone.

http://cooklikeyourgrandmother.com/recipe-browser/

Some recipes show up in multiple categories. That’s intentional.

There’s a big group at the end that isn’t in a category yet. That’s not intentional. I’m working through those as fast as I can, so they’ll be moving into their correct sections throughout the day.

If you point to a picture but don’t click, the recipe title will pop up.

I haven’t fully tested this on other browsers and operating systems, so you may not be seeing it the same way I am. If you’re having any problems with it, please let me know in the comments on this post. Please include what browser and operating system you use. For instance: Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista; or Firefox 3 on Mac.

Next up, once I’ve got the categories done: Printable recipe cards.

Great idea! Any chance it could have slightly bigger pictures (maybe 250 wide vs 150) with a little padding between each one?

It was fun to scroll through the list and see which ones I recognized!

Viewed with FF 3.5.6 on Win XP.

There’s definitely going to be some more space between them. I haven’t worked on the look and feel yet, just wanted to get it out there for people to use while I make it “pretty”.

I don’t want to go bigger on the images, though, because there’s a lot of them on one page. That will be a really slow download.

Mr. Kime, my only request is to ask if you could add a “slow cooker” categorization to the recipes; that would be hot awesome. Thanks!

That is pretty stinking cool! Now if you could figure out a way to send me the food, too, that would be even better.

Thor, I haven’t done that many slow cooker recipes, but I’ll see what I can do. I still haven’t figured out exactly how “tags” are going to work on that page … I’m thinking of a search interface that will use them.

Naomi, if I figure that out you’ll see a lot more posts here, because I’ll be making an absolute fortune and quit my day job.

I love this site! My only “problem” with the site is your organization of the recipes. I happened upon the site when I was looking for crock pot tenderloin. This recipe is fantastic. Then I decided to look for other recipes. Perhaps if you had a tab interface for each page, it took me a lot of clicking to get to the recipe browser. Your HOME/About/blog work well but a tab for the recipe browser would be great as well!
Sorry for the criticism but I do web design as well as my 9to5 and this just sticks out like a sore thumb. Love the recipes…thanks!

dbouchard, those are fair points. I just spent several weeks getting everything moved over from Blogger, and haven’t had time to do anything with the design yet. Besides that, the recipe browser is still a bit resource-intensive. I’m working on some optimization before I make the link more prominent.

I can understand, it is a lot of work to move and organize. I have been doing the same thing myself, tired of the whole blogger thing. Finally have my own domain but moving on the web is just as frustrating at times as packing up a home. Having a system is key. Good luck and good job. Are you doing all of your own coding? Fun!

Yup, doing it all myself. Not because I particularly want to, I’m just very picky, and anyone I could afford isn’t likely to be up to my standards.

That is totally awesome! Though, like Naomi says, maybe you can arrange for delivery of said items?

Cooking used to be all about making food that tasted good. But somewhere along the way, we seem to have decided the diet-of-the-week was more important. How to Cook Like Your Grandmother is a return to recipes and techniques that are based on what tastes good, not on junk science and fad diets. You won't find the words lite, low, lean, free or skim anywhere. This is all real food, cooked the way Grandma would have done it.

People have been making and eating food as long as there have been people. And food. But somehow we've let ourselves believe that it's something only experts can do "right". That's where Starting From Scratch comes in. I'm not saying you'll go from zero to hero just by reading it, but at least now you'll know what those self-proclaimed experts are talking about.
