Blake, if you don't use any white flour or bread flour, add a couple of teaspoons of wheat gluten. Otherwise it will come out pretty flat.

Would you have to do anything different for this recipe if you were to substitute whole wheat bread flour? or does whole wheat behave the same way as regular bread flour?

I will try this and also premake the dough up and bag it for a camping trip. Since it's fried on a pan, this will probably be a new camping family favorite. Yum!
I love to buy rusty, nasty cast iron at garage sales and thrift shops. Pop them in your self cleaning oven when you clean the oven, then season it..."and that's it."

Just found this, it's so much simpler than I thought! thanks for the recipe!

you should try squirting a bit of fresh lemon juice on the dough after adding the cinnamon and sugar... the tanginess of the lemon brings a whole new dimension to this amazing pastry!

I made sausage and pepperoni bread yesterday using frozen dough, the kind that comes three loves to a bag (I have had no luck making my own - YET)and had one loaf leftover. I made this fried dough and my family gobbled it up! It was so simple, I'm not sure why it never dawned on me to try it earlier. Thank you, Drew.

Redchair, I guess you don't just carry a laptop into the kitchen, do you? I'm afraid to think how much flour is probably in my keyboard.

Tamara, why? Because I'm not getting any skinnier eating like this. So my only hope is to make everyone else fatter so I look good by comparison. (Yeah, I'll go with that.)

Barb, I do believe I've got some maple syrup. [sigh] Now I have to go make another batch.

Why, Drew, why?? As if I don't have enough trouble eating right without you posting stuff like this! My only saving grace here is going to be that my husband had gastric bypass a few years ago, so he can't really eat bread or doughy foods, so that keeps me from making them too much. But this...this I might have to make and secretly eat all by myself, haha. If you figure out how to get more of a funnel-cakey texture without deep frying, though, let me know. I like the crispier outside, too.

Thanks for yet another guilty indulgence :)
