A Milestone, An Offer, and A Request

The Milestone

Any time you read a blog for a while, you get used to the layout. The story is over there, the ads are on that side. Eventually you don’t even notice the ads.

But if you look over there to the right today, just under the link for the book, is a new graphic with the subscription link. As of this morning there are more than a thousand subscribers. Woo-hoo!

That number wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for lots of you Stumbling your favorite dishes, doing your own versions and linking back here, or pointing your friends and family this way. I can’t thank each of you individually, but believe me when I say I appreciate every single time someone offers me a virtual “thumbs up”.

Wow–a thousand readers? Props to you.

I already posted my family recipe. I don’t have a thousand readers, but the one person who has actually made it so far really liked it. So I’ll accept that as a success, since I had my doubts that anyone who didn’t grow up on red beans and rice would love it as much as I do.

Thanks, all. I was starting to think it would never happen, so this is really cool.

Kristin, the last (only) time I like red beans and rice was when we cooked it over an open fire on a beach in the Bahamas on my honeymoon. But I’ll try yours, it looks good.

R2S, you can do one. Write up two recipes per week starting now, and you’ll have a book by this time next year. Like Seth Godin says, drip … drip … drip … It adds up.

I’m happy my bread recipe was good for your site–you made my day! Your blog is actually the only one I read everyday… I’ve glanced at others, but I really like yours. Your pictures were the “catch” that got me hooked. And your readers post good comments!

Congrats Drew! That’s a lot of readers. I can’t even get all 60 of mine to comment – jerks.

Let’s all go leave a comment on Sweet Bird’s site. And tell her how ridiculously good her food pictures are. Holy cow, that looks good.

And by the way, I’m signing that petition in the right column.

Drew, I have several hundred recipes (my own)….so how do you take the transition into a book?

Sweet Bird, no I’m not. Just ask my kids.

Cooking used to be all about making food that tasted good. But somewhere along the way, we seem to have decided the diet-of-the-week was more important. How to Cook Like Your Grandmother is a return to recipes and techniques that are based on what tastes good, not on junk science and fad diets. You won't find the words lite, low, lean, free or skim anywhere. This is all real food, cooked the way Grandma would have done it.

People have been making and eating food as long as there have been people. And food. But somehow we've let ourselves believe that it's something only experts can do "right". That's where Starting From Scratch comes in. I'm not saying you'll go from zero to hero just by reading it, but at least now you'll know what those self-proclaimed experts are talking about.
